Research specialisations

Animal behaviour

Research in the animal behaviour group considers animal behaviour in a diverse selection of animals. A common theme in many of our past and current research projects is animal communication: movement-based visual signals, acoustic signals and vibratory signals.

Behavioural ecologyBehavioural ecology of Australian birds

The Avian Behaviour and Ecology Research Group conducts research on the evolutionary biology of birds.

Fire ecology

Investigating the effects of fire on multiple taxa – birds, reptiles, mammals and invertebrates.

Insect ecology

Our research is focused on insect ecology and conservation.

bundoorensis prelude to matingInsect-plant interactions

We study the olfactory, visual and vibratory cues and signals that native Australian insects use to make host plant choices and select mates. We seek to provide mechanistic explanations of insect behaviour that underpin complex macro-ecological and population-level phenomena.

Muscle cellMuscle cell research

Our lab examines aspects of muscle function using mechanically-skinned single fibres.

Reproductive Physiology thumbReproductive physiology

Researching maternal reproductive investment and the subsequent impact on offspring characteristics and fitness.

ThumbnailScience education

Researching assessment and the student learning experience.
