Department of Zoology

Undergraduate courses

Zoology is the scientific study of animals and encompasses evolutionary, ecological and physiological areas of investigation. Zoology is taught at first, second and third year levels and a fourth year honours subject is available for those wishing to gain research experience. There is strong emphasis on field and laboratory work, animal identification, and developing "hands-on" skills.

A range of single or double degrees within the biological sciences areas of study incorporate the discipline of zoology. Students can major in Zoology in degrees such as Biological Sciences, Conservation Biology & Ecology, and Animal & Veterinary Biosciences - view the individual course pages for further detail on your preferred option.

First year Zoology introduces basic aspects of animal diversity, evolution and physiology. Two zoology subjects are offered in second year; Australian Fauna and Ecology, and Comparative Vertebrate Morphology and Physiology. In third year, students select areas of study according to their interest; these include Behavioural Ecology, Animal Behaviour, Freshwater Biology, Coastal and Marine Ecology, Muscle Physiology, and week-long field courses to the Victorian Mallee and to Heron Island on the Great Barrier Reef.
