Jack Reynolds was previously lecturer in philosophy at the University of Tasmania, and is well-known for his work on Merleau-Ponty, Deleuze and Derrida. He is the author of Merleau-Ponty and Derrida: Intertwining Embodiment and Alterity, Athens: Ohio University Press, 2004, and co-author of Understanding Existentialism, Chesham, UK: Acumen Publishing, 2005. He has also worked at the interface of analytic and European philosophy, and is currently working on a research project that explores the similarities and differences between the two approaches to philosophy.
Antony Eagle gained his PhD in philosophy from Princeton University in 2004 and is currently a fellow of Exeter College, University of Oxford. He will be joining the program in early 2008. Although his research focus has been on metaphysics and the philosophy of science, his philosophical interests are broad. His most significant work has been on the foundations of probability and other modal concepts in the sciences; since taking up his position at Oxford, he has also been working on topics in ontology, metametaphysics, philosophy of language, philosophy of mathematics, and philosophy of physics. Three members of the philosophy staff have just returned from a conference and series of meetings in Hong Kong and China. Andrew Brennan, Freya Mathews and Norva Lo were speakers at an international conference on Environmental Ethics held at the China College of Environmental Management, Qinghuangdao. Prior to that, Prof Brennan and Dr Lo met with potential collaborators in Hong Kong to duscuss a research project to test the influence of philosophical theories and worldviews on environmental attitudes and beliefs. While in Qinghuangdao, they also met with colleagues from Nanjing Forestry University who agreed to administer a pilot survey for the project, which is part of an 'experimental' approach to environmental philosophy that Prof Brennan and Dr Lo are aiming to develop. Prof Methews also explored possible collaboration on the relation of Daoism to environmental management and design.
