Prosthetics and Orthotics is the clinical discipline related to the provision of prostheses (artificial limbs) to people with amputations and orthoses (supportive devices) to people with musculoskeletal weakness or neurological disorders.The course. The course requires 3.5 years of full time study with the option of an additional honors year. In the first years of the course students learn about human functioning and development along with prosthetic and orthotic manufacturing and theory. In subsequent years students develop skills in research methodology and clinical assessment and application of prosthetic and orthotic techniques. Students undertake clinical placements at prosthetic and orthotic facilities in the 1st, 2nd and 4th years of the course. The course is delivered through a combination of technical, practical, tutorial and lecture formats. While most of the subjects are fixed, some elective subjects are offered in the third year. Professional recognition. The La Trobe Bachelor of Prosthetics and Orthotics is an internationally recognized Bachelor Degree course. Graduates of the course are also eligible for membership to the Australian Orthotic and Prosthetic Association.. Recognition of prior learning. Applicants who have undertaken previous tertiary studies or work related experience in prosthetics and orthotics may apply for course exemptions. Credits of up to 2.5 years may be offered to eligible candidates. Prerequisites: IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 575. Two of Biology, Chemistry, Year 12 Maths, Physical Education or Physics. Applicants who have undertaken previous studies or work related experience in prosthetics and orthotics may be eligible for course exemptions. ISPO Category 2 qualification holders: Students possessing an ISPO Category 2 qualification are eligible to apply for exemption from the first year of the course. Students will then be required to successfully complete the remaining 2.5 years of study at La Trobe University to receive their degree. It is recommended that students from non-English speaking backgrounds complete the first year of the course to assist with aclimitising to studying in a second language however this is negotiable on an individual basis. Japanese College certificate holders: Students possessing a Japanese College certificate in prosthetics and orthotics are eligible to apply for an “upgrade” to the Bachelor of Prosthetics and Orthotics degree allowing for course credit up to 2.5 years. Students will then be required to successfully complete one year of academic study at La Trobe University to receive the degree. SUBJECTS UNDERTAKEN: * POR21CPB Patient Evaluation 15 Credit
Points Japanese students may apply directly through La Trobe Universities International Program Office or by registering with Kobe College of Medical Welfare,(Sanda Campus) Prosthetics and Orthotics College. Application requirements. International applicants must meet the La Trobe University’s international student requirements including a minimum English Language proficiency requirement of IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 575.
