The Bouverie Centre has
a long history of providing training to professionals working with
families. Bouverie has a specialised academic unit, and all centre
staff are involved in teaching. Academic services offers both Award
and in conjunction with the Community Services Program, Professional
Continuing Education Courses.

A number of different levels of
family therapy training and coursework in family sensitive practice
are
being offered in 2008 for health and welfare professionals.

Graduate Certificate in Narrative Therapy (NEW COURSE)
This one-year, part-time certificate course is designed
to present theories and practices useful in working with individuals,
families and communities. Drawing on post-structural and narrative
theory and practice, participants working in a variety of professional
roles will be encouraged to relate their learnings to their own
work settings.
The course will be undertaken six hours per week over two semesters
of 13 weeks each.
Further professional supervision and family therapy training
would be required for accreditation as a family therapist.

Graduate Certificate in Family Therapy
This certificate course is designed to provide an introduction

families. While mainly drawing on ideas related to family sensitive
practice and family therapy, participants working in a variety

3. Graduate Certificate in Systemic Supervision,
Consultation and Training
This is a one-year course designed for counselling and
psychotherapy clinicians, trainers and supervisors. The course
proposes to educate experienced therapists in the skills of supervision,
consultation and training and consists of two units covering
theoretical models of systemic supervision, consultation and
training, with a further two units focussing on systemic practice
in these areas. Applicants must have postgraduate qualifications
in health and welfare professions. Applicants will be selected
on academic merit and demonstrated current interest and practice
in the area of supervision, training or consultation. Applicants
must be currently working as supervisors. The course is offered
part time and conducted three hours (early evening) per week
for two 13-week semesters including two 2-day intensives per
semester (Friday/Saturday).

4. Graduate Certificate of Family
Therapy in Psychiatry
The Graduate Certificate of Family Therapy in Psychiatry
is a clinically based postgraduate course designed for Psychiatrists
and other Medical Practitioners who have an interest in mental
health and counselling. This two year (part time) course of 3
hours per week duration explores family sensitive practice and
family therapy across a number of clinical settings with a range
of target populations and presenting issues. It provides opportunities
for skill development grounded in traditional and contemporary
schools of family therapy. The course includes assessment, supervision
and clinical feedback for students.

5. Master of Clinical Family Therapy
This is a 2-year family therapy training course (previously
a Postgraduate Diploma in Family Therapy). Each year comprises
6 hours of training per week for two 13 week semesters. The course
provides training in family therapy with a focus on supervision
of family work integrating family therapy theory. Students are
required to be currently working with families and to have had
some work experience prior to entry. Following successful completion
of the course (with additional supervision) students will be
eligible for clinical membership of the Victorian Association
of Family Therapists (VAFT).This
is the first Masters level clinical family therapy training offered
in Victoria.

6. Master of Couple and Relationship
Counselling
Jointly run by Relationships Australia Vic. (RAV) & The
Bouverie Centre, this Masters degree offers a range of practice,
theory and clinical research opportunities: for experienced practitioners
wishing to specialise as couples counsellors; and for experienced
couple and family therapists and specialised couple mediators
interested in advanced conceptual, supervisory and research skills
so that they can assume positions of leadership in the field.
This part-time course can be taken as a full coursework Masters
or with the option of completing an 18,000 word minor research
thesis. Choice of units include: RAV’s Specialist Course
in Couples Counselling; RAV’s Clinical Internship; qualitative
research; systemic supervision; trauma & sexual abuse; postmodern
family formation; and recent developments in couple & family
therapy.

7. Doctor of Clinical Science
(ClinScD) in Family Therapy
As with the Masters, the aim of this course is to
equip family therapists with advanced conceptual, practice,
supervisory and research skills. A 67% research degree,
this professional doctorate in family therapy involves
3 years full-time study (or equivalent part-time) and includes
a thesis of 30,000 to 60,000 words, one core unit, research
colloquia, and three clinical electives. Applicants must
have the equivalent of an honours degree and a Postgraduate
Diploma of Family Therapy. This course is HECS exempt and
full-time applicants can apply for Commonwealth or University
research scholarships.

8. Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Family
Therapy
This is a 3 year full-time or 5 year part-time research
degree requiring the successful completion of a research thesis
of up to 80,000 words in an area relevant to family therapy.
Applicants are expected to have completed relevant family
therapy training. This course is usually HECS exempt and full-time
applicants can apply for Commonwealth or University research
scholarships.
