The Graduate Certificate in Family Therapy aims to develop beginning conceptual and practical skills in working with families.
Unit Title: INTRODUCTION TO FAMILY THERAPY A Unit Code: FTH4IFA
In this unit, the theories and methods of family therapy are explored utilizing core concepts that are common to the various family therapy theoretical approaches and lenses. Students’ own work context, role plays and case examples will be used for students to explore the application of these concepts.
Semester: 1
Class requirements: one 3-hour seminar per week
Assessment: one 2,500-word essay (60%),
one 2,000-word essay (40%)
Pre-requisite: Introductory Workshop in Family Therapy: a four-day,
Continuing Education course offered by The Bouverie Centre,
or alternative equivalent course from other institution.
Co-requisite: FTH4WSA. Students must be enrolled in HCFT

Unit Title: INTRODUCTION TO FAMILY THERAPY B Unit Code: FTH4IFB
In this unit, methods and theory of family therapy are further explored with other lenses such as culture and gender. Methods and theories of working in specific situations will be developed, such as conflicted families, grief, trauma, working with children, ABI and mental illness. Students’ own work context, role plays and case examples will be used for students to explore the application of these ideas.
Semester: 2
Class requirements: one 3-hour seminar per week
Assessment: one 4,000-word essay (100%)
Co-requisite: FTH4WSB. Students must be enrolled in HCFT

Unit Title: FAMILY WORK SKILLS A Unit Code: FTH4WSA
In this unit, students are taught to integrate knowledge of family sensitive frameworks and relevant conceptual theories with their work roles. Influences on students' practice, including work context, previous training and family of origin will be explored in the safety of small groups. These will be connected to issues in their work with families. Strategies and skills for working with families in their particular settings will be explored. Students will develop skills through roleplays, case discussion & observation
Semester: 1
Class requirements: one 3-hour seminar per week.
Assessment: one 1,500-word essay (40%),
Hurdle requirement: identify learning goals
one 50-minute individual oral presentation (60%)
Co-requisite: FTH4IFA. Students must be enrolled in HCFT

Unit Title: FAMILY WORK SKILLS B Unit Code: FTH4WSB
In this unit, students are taught to integrate knowledge of family sensitive frameworks and relevant conceptual theories with their work roles. one oral group presentation (10-minutes/member) (20%),
one 40-minute individual oral presentation (50%)

Course Cost: $4,450 ($4,350 * subsidised fee)
