Welcome to the Department of Botany
Botany is a modern and dynamic science, covering a range of disciplines from molecular biology and biotechnology to ecology and conservation. It involves the study of plants and related organisms like fungi and algae. Knowledge of these organisms contributes greatly to our understanding of both natural ecosystems and agriculture. Plants impact on many aspects of daily life, including providing food, medicines, paper and building materials, and recreation and tourism. The staff of the Department are actively involved in many of these areas of research, and this range of interests is reflected in the subjects that we teach at all levels from undergraduate to Honours and Postgraduate studies. The Department of Botany is part of the School of Life Sciences, in the Faculty of Science, Technology and Engineering.
