Finding an injured animal

When you are in a situation of caring for an injured animal it is best to get advice from an expert. The volunteers at Wildlife Victoria are in the best position to assist. They run regular training courses and are often on the look out for new ‘wildlife carers’.

If you are unable to contact a carer immediately, the following instructions can assist:

  1. Get the animal into a quiet, dark environment. Often a cardboard box with a small rag inside is comforting.
  2. Provide the animal with a small bowl of water to allow it to re-hydrate.
  3. Note the exact location the animal has come from – when the animal is rehabilitated, this provides a spot for release after the animal is rehabilitated.
  4. Keep the animal as still and undisturbed as possible.
