Research at the Melbourne Wildlife Sanctuary

La Trobe University has shown a strong commitment to the conservation and protection of indigenous animals and plants through their continued management of the Melbourne Wildlife Sanctuary and associated reserves. Throughout the 40 years of operation a considerable amount of research has been conducted. Some of the more recent research and practical investigations have been:

  • Aquatic macro invertebrate comparisons between wetlands with and without mosquito fish
  • Parasitic behaviour in various bat species
  • Surveying techniques for archaeology
  • The archaeological survey of the amenities block and old tip site
  • Behaviour and time budgeting of the Michrochiropteran species, Chalinolobus gouldii, within artificial roost sites
  • Mycorrhizal associations of Danthonia species... and their effect on plant growth
Ideas for future research projects
  • Comparisons of nesting box design and success
  • Visitor impacts
  • Authentic learning experiences
  • Sanctuary vegetation surveys
  • Sanctuary fauna surveys
