The La Trobe University Melbourne Wildlife Sanctuary was set up in 1967 as a project in the restoration and management of indigenous flora and fauna. La Trobe University is the caretaker of more than 100 hectares divided into four areas:

The Melbourne Wildlife Sanctuary

The Melbourne Wildlife Sanctuary covers 30 hectares of recreated habitat that was once part of a large hospital facility and is now a major centre for research and education towards ecology and biodiversity.

The Gresswell Forest Nature Conservation Reserve

The Gresswell Forest Nature Conservation Reserve covers 50 hectares (110 acres) of remnant River Red Gum woodland.
