Guided tours

Take your club, group or society on a guided tour through one of Melbourne's hidden treasures - the River Red Gum woodlands and wetlands of the Melbourne Wildlife Sanctuary. Come on either a nocturnal or day tour to discover what a great haven for animals the Melbourne Wildlife Sanctuary is.

Nocturnal (spotlight) tours

What is this spotlighting all about?

A high proportion of Australia's unique wildlife is nocturnal and emerges only at night. So if you want to see them you need to go out at night. It is a whole different world - possums, bats (the small insect eating ones mostly), birds and the odd gecko can be seen in the bush. Along with all these animals is thousands of species of insects and spiders and other mini beasts.

When do tours run?

Tours run all year round on the third Wednesday of every month and start 15 minutes before sunset - so times are arranged when booking. Group bookings are welcome and alternate evenings can be arranged depending on numbers.

To minimise the impact that tours have on our ecosystems we limit our tours to 15 people per group with a maximum of 4 groups in the Sanctuary per night.

What equipment do I need to bring?

Dress for the weather, good footwear and long pants - otherwise nothing special is required. We use our own equipment - special coloured filter spotlights and bat detectors.

Daylight tours

Why not treat your club, extended family or group to a guided tour of the Melbourne Wildlife Sanctuary. Day tours can be arranged for any day, any time and are a great way of learning about the Melbourne region's natural history.

As with nocturnal tours, visitors should dress for the weather and wear good comfortable shoes.
