SEAS Year 12 Special Consideration 2008

(for complete details and information on how to apply please see www.vtac.edu.au)

Year 12 Special Consideration is aimed at assisting those current year 12 students who have experienced circumstances that can be demonstrated to have had an adverse impact on their performance in the final year of secondary school.

Year 12 Special Consideration is only for those applicants who have not had their circumstances compensated by their school or have not been granted a derived exam score by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA).

Information outlined on the application will be taken into account when ranking students for 2008 selection, provided the applicant meets the criteria for Year 12 Special Consideration and supplies the required evidence, as listed under 'requirements and evidence' on the SEAS online application.

When evaluating the information supplied each study score represents the VCAA's best available measure of the learning achieved in the subject. Adjustments to ranking will therefore be made only where there is evidence that the circumstances have resulted in the learning achieved in Year 12 not being a reliable guide to the applicant's potential for success in the course. Year 12 applicants will be considered individually, but in all cases the expectation is that such adjustments to ranking will be minor.

Applicants to Year 12 Special Consideration cannot apply for the same consideration as part of the application for Access and Equity.

The following are examples of some circumstances which may be considered under this scheme:

  • personal health or that of a family member;
  • divorce or separation of parents;
  • adverse living conditions;
  • excessive family responsibility;
  • natural disaster and refugee status.

You are not eligible to apply for Year 12 Special Consideration if you had control over the circumstances which disadvantaged you. For example, you chose to be away from school for prolonged periods of time due to commitments as a performing artist or elite athlete.

For the majority of VCE students experiencing adverse circumstances in Year 12, their school will have granted special provision to compensate for these circumstances, either in the form of arrangements or the adjustment of scores for school based assessments. If the circumstances impacted directly on the examination period, the VCAA may adjust examination scores under special provision.

Eligibility
To be eligible for the Year 12 Special Consideration scheme you must:

  • satisfy Year 12 this year;
  • be a current Year 12 student;
  • have experienced the circumstances which disadvantaged you only in the past twelve months;
  • have submitted an application for entry to tertiary study through VTAC;
  • have met the Extra requirements for courses to which you have or may apply for at Change of Preference, as outlined in the VTAC Guide 2008.
