Next generation of artists showcase their works
Members of the community are welcome to witness the birth of the next famous Bendigo-educated artist or designer when graduating third year students of Visual Arts & Graphic Design showcase their talents at the On the Brink graduate exhibition 2009.
Head of School, Dr James McArdle, says the graduates organised, curated and raised sponsorship themselves. They also chose the title for the exhibition. ‘The title is entirely appropriate. It evokes notions of risk and courage and raises questions about where students are to go after they complete their studies,’ Dr McArdle said.

Dr McArdle says that the third year of the course includes a two-day colloquium and a research investigation designed to assist graduates in their formal entry to the creative professions.

‘The many fields into which Australian creatives are recruited – apart from the obvious fields of teaching and freelance self-employment – are explored in the conference,’ Dr McArdle said.

‘This includes curatorship, art as therapy, work in museums or art galleries as fine-arts directors or as curators, planning and setting up art exhibits, as art critics for newspapers or magazines or as consultants to foundations or institutional collectors.

‘Other opportunities for emerging artists include animation, broadcast media and the motion picture industry, industrial or architectural photography or photojournalism and community arts facilitators.’

Dr McArdle said the AGIdeas international design forum in Melbourne performed a similar inspirational and confidence-building role for graphic design students.

The On the Brink graduate exhibition 2009 will be opened by guest speaker, Anita von Bibra, Director, Woodbine Art Gallery, Malmsbury. Members of the community are invited to join staff, students and their families for the celebratory event at the Phyllis Palmer Gallery on the Bendigo campus at 7pm on Friday 13 November 2009.
