Undergraduate StudiesBachelor of Graphic Design
The Bachelor of Graphic Design is offered on both the Bendigo and Mildura campuses and involves three years full time or equivalent part time study. The Graphic Design industry is as diverse as the many individuals who work within it. However, discrete streams within the industry can be identified — advertising, product and corporate, publishing and editorial, digital and multimedia and illustration. In each of these areas the common factor is the combination of creative thinking and aesthetic design in the service of message delivery. Effective communication is at the heart of successful design whether it be for commercial purposes or for any desired social benefit; an ability to create and promote effective messages is the aim of the study of graphic design at La Trobe. At La Trobe Bendigo the study of design also provides students with an opportunity to pursue an interest in illustration, with a particular view to specialization and employment within the publishing industry. FacilitiesToday's design industry is entirely digital. While designs and illustrations may be produced by any traditional means, while photography, in both traditional and digital form, is an essential tool for the contemporary designer, design production is completely created within the computer environment. The studios at La Trobe offer students two fully-equipped Mac labs, with all the latest production software. Students also have online access to on-campus, proofing, print and finishing services. Students are expected to provide their own computers for off-campus use, and are required to provide portable hard-drives for back-up, transfer of files, review, presentation and assessment. StaffAll graphic design staff are active, working professional designers, and illustrators, each with a long history of success within the industry, with particular expertise in the areas of publishing and illustration. Career OpportunitiesThe industry of 'graphic design' is a broad based industry, its practitioners can be found in all areas of both manufacturing and communications. Design graduates are employed in education, media, public relations, advertising, publishing, manufacturing and leisure industries, community services, travel and marketing.
