Bachelor of Visual ArtsPainting and Drawing![]() Ash Artist: Lynette Patone Bachelor of Visual Arts students can major in painting and drawing. The units Theory and Methodologies in Studio Practice and Visual Arts Media Workshop, together, constitute the major study and are offered within the painting and drawing studio. Students majoring in other areas may combine painting and drawing with their major area through Comparative Studies in Visual Media. Painting and Drawing is available at both the Bendigo and Mildura campuses. Painting and drawing may be studied within Visual Arts Media Workshop as an elective unit by students within the Bachelor of Graphic Design and students from outside the School of Visual Arts and Design. Painting and drawing may also be taken at Honours (fourth year) level and there are opportunities for research at Masters and Ph.D levels. Painting and Drawing are taught together as one discipline, covering all the main methodologies used in artistic practice. Students are encouraged to finally be self-directed within their chosen mediums, both practically and conceptually. Innovative and challenging studio practice is fostered and encouraged through projects, excursions, visiting artists and a lively exhibition program on campus and downtown (Bendigo). This course allows much innovative cross-over between mediums, whilst taking students systematically through an in depth analysis and understanding of all the drawing and painting modes and methods. The course aims at expanding student’s awareness of alternate ways of painting and drawing, potential allied areas of research and their relevance to contemporary practice. The unique position of painting and drawing within contemporary culture is the corner stone of this course. Students gain an understanding of the passion and integrity of serious creativity and the power of image making is developed through a capacity for critical judgment. Some students choose to use divergent media within this unit such as sculptural installations, digital projections and mixed-media.
