Illustration can be studied as an elective of two, one semester units by students within the Bachelor of Graphic Design and students from outside the School of Visual Arts and Design. Students in the Bachelor of Visual Arts may incorporate illustration in the units of Comparative Studies in Visual Media through the painting and drawing discipline. Illustration is only available at the Bendigo Campus.

The illustration elective enables the student to survey the works of significant illustrators and to develop a personal style or approach to illustration application. The units cover the application of illustration to book publishing, advertising and design, environmental illustration and editorial illustration. Within the units there is a strong emphasis on concept development. Students are encouraged to investigate a range of traditional illustrative media as well as the use of computer processes.

Students studying at honours and post-graduate level can also can also work in the discipline of illustration.
