Jacques Soddell - The River
Using lights, multiple video projections & speakers this installation
is built from digitally abstracted sounds and video of water in its many
forms. Named after Pare Lorentz’s depression era documentary film
classic about the effect of misuse of the environment on a river, and
taking cues from Ralph Steiner’s 1929 experimental silent film
H2O in which he abstracted images from the flow of water, it focuses
on sound and image as abstract entities, while hinting at the politics
of disregard of our environment (an old radio at the entrance to the
installation plays a composition based on a report about the state of
the Murray-Darling River system).
This work flows from my previous works on water-based themes including
I am sitting near a pool (part of a Fourcast residency at Dudley House,
2004), This fountain operates without water (Fourcast residency at Castlemaine
State Festival, 2005), the abstract film wavelength (2006) and Trickle
(The Big Smoke group show at Blindside, July 2008)
