In collaboration with Ateneo de Manila University, the La Trobe University
Visual Arts Centre welcomes Artist-in-Residence Jan Leeroy New, winner
of the 2009 Ateneo Art Awards.
Each year La Trobe University hosts the winner of this award, which was
established to support an emerging artist under 35 years of age from
the Philippines. La Trobe University and the Visual Arts Centre is pleased
to announce that the three year partnership has been renewed for a further
three years.
Graduating cum laude from the University of the Philippines, Jan Leeroy
New has been exhibiting since 1998 and is the recipient of numerous prestigious
art awards.
His new exhibition, entitled ‘Psychopomp’, will be developed
on site at the Visual Arts Centre and visitors are invited to see Leeroy
at work on this new installation. ‘Psychopomp’ refers to
spirit guides, or gatekeepers, who assist spirits in their transition
into another realm. The work will include recycled materials and found
objects sourced from the opportunity shops and recycling centres of Bendigo.
Leeroy was nominated for the Ateneo Art Awards based on his installation
in the 2008 Singapore Biennale. The work, Terratoma II (War of the Worlds),
was a ten metre installation attached to the outside of the old Singapore
Town Hall and featured a large fiberglass tumor surrounded by alien figures.
Leeroy’s work explores hybrid forms of deities and supernatural
beings with strong themes of universal mythology.
While in Bendigo, Leeroy will also be presenting lectures to La Trobe
University fine arts students and staff.
Because of the evolving and site specific nature of ‘Psychopomp’ there
will not be an exhibition launch. Leeroy has already commenced work,
and an end of exhibition celebration will be held on Saturday 24 October
from 2-4pm at the La Trobe University Visual Arts Centre, 121 View Street,
Bendigo.
