New grants- Australian Research Council (ARC)

Staff from the Research Services office have been involved with the ARC Major Grants Announcement Expo held at Parliament House on October 26.  At this event the Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, Senator Kim Carr, announced funding of over $394.13 million for 1145 projects under the Discovery Indigenous Researchers Development, Discovery Projects and Linkage Projects schemes.  Congratulations to the following researchers who were awarded funding:

ARC Linkage Projects Scheme:

- Dr Roman Makarevich was awarded $68,558 for his project entitled 'Plasma layers, waves and fountains: Probing the ionosphere with over-the-horizon radars'.  The partner organisations are IPS Radio and Space Services

- Dr Benjamin Kear leads a national team of investigators that was awarded $600,000 for his project entitled 'Mesozoic Austral Biodiversity: Research and Regional Museum Applications' The partner organisations are the Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum, Australian Opal Centre, Museum Victoria, Outback Gondwana Foundation, Queensland Museum and South Australian Museum

Professor Edith Bavin, Dr Cheryl Dissanayake and Dr Evan Kidd, for 'Language processing in children with high functioning autism: Evidence from eye tracking'

Professor Judith Brett, for  The Enigmatic Mr Deakin'

Dr Marcel Jackson, Prof Brian Davey and Dr Todd Niven; for 'Complexity in Algebra and Algebra in Complexity: the role of finite semigroups and general algebra'

Dr Alexander Maier; Dr Matthew McKenzie for  'Biogenesis of red blood cell membrane modifications by the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum'

Dr Susan Martin, for 'Cities of Words: Women's cultures of reading and writing in colonial Melbourne and beyond'

Professor Timothy Murray; Asst Prof Susan Lawrence and Dr Sarah Hayes for 'Suburban archaeology: approaching an archaeology of the middle class in 19th century Melbourne'

Professor Raymond Norton, for: 'Evolution of a protein fold from toxin to physiological regulator: an endogenous potassium channel blocker in humans'

Professor Raymond  Norton, for 'New analgesics based on µ-conotoxins: structure-based design of helical mimetics'

Professor SusanPaxton, for 'Paving the way for effective public health interventions for bulimic eating disorders: Understanding stigma and mental health literacy'

Dr Svetlana Petelina, for 'The coldest region on Earth gets even colder'

Associate Professor Geoff Prince and Prof Philip Broadbridge for 'New Geometric and Entropy Techniques for Differential Equations'

Professor George Stephenson, for 'Cross-bridge cycling-dependent activation of force production in the absence of Ca2+ in fast- and slow-twitch skeletal muscle fibre types'

Dr Nicola Stern, for 'Human responses to long term landscape and climate change in the Willandra Lakes World Heritage Area'

Dr Diana Stojanovski and Dr Michael  Ryan for 'Transporting proteins to and within mitochondria'

Professor David Vaux, for 'Creation of a non-venomous honey bee'
