Unit Description:This subject combines emphasis on further development of reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in Spanish with an introduction to the cultural, historical and political realities of Latin America through a number of case studies. Attention focuses on various cultural aspects of specific Latin American countries. Among the topics to be examined are violence, critical journalism, human rights, testimony, relations between Latin American countries or zones, and the United States and Europe. Class, race and gender issues are also scrutinised. In relation to these facets of Latin America, a range of written and audio-visual materials will be studied.
Prerequisites:SPA2ADA or co-ordinator's approval
Incompatibles:SPA2/3CSP, LAS2/CSP, SPA2LAT
Class Requirements:one 1.5 hour lecture and one 1.5 hour seminar per week. For a pass in this subject students must normally attend at least 80% of the language classes.
