Unit Description:In this subject we survey some of the critical issues current in sociology. Social division and exclusion have reemerged as major problems the world around. Globalization accentuates existing patterns of inequality and individualization. These trends raise the issue of social solidarity, or what it is that holds societies or communities together. In this context we examine problems of Fordism, place, work and consumption with special reference to cultural traffic. We employ these issues to establish something of the scope of sociology and the variety of theories, methods and approaches that consitute it.
Prerequisites:30 credit points of first year sociology or anthropology, or Asian Studies, or co-ordinator's approval
Class Requirements:one 3-hour lecture per week
