| Unit Description: | In this unit students are provided with an introduction to the study of International Relations. We will examine the emergence of a properly global economy after 1945, and the international efforts to try to provide order to these economic relations. Students will then be introduced to a series of processes that are central to the working of the global economy and the international political system: globalization; global production; and global trade and finance. We then consider some of the important political and social consequences of these processes including inequality; human rights; migration; the environment and gender relations. In conclusion students will analyse the way in which the security and economic well being of individuals and political communities can be advanced in a globalizing world and the tensions which exist between the differing needs of individuals and communities. |
