| Unit Description: | In this unit, students are introduced to the fundamentals of structural mechanics. Topics covered include force and force systems, equations of equilibrium in two and three dimensions, external and internal forces, free-body diagrams, supports and calculation of reactions, analysis of statically determinate structural systems, truss analysis (method of joints and method of sections), distributed forces, centre of gravity. properties of areas and masses, forces in statically determinate beams, shear and bending moment diagrams, axial and shear stresses, stresses due to axial, bending and shear, combined stresses and introductions to torsion and buckling of columns. |

| Class Requirements: | Four hours of lectures and one hour of tutorials/laboratory per week. |
