Unit Code:HIS2NAE
Alternative Unit Code:HIS3NAE
Unit Short Title:NATIVE AMERICAN ACTIVISM: INDIANS, HOLLYWOOD AND HISTORY
Credit Points:20
Unit Description:In this unit students will examine Native Americans in the United States of the 20th century. Contrary to all (white) expectations, American Indians did not disappear or vanish. This became dramatically obvious in the 1960s and 70s when Native American activism became prominent. This ethnic revival was all the more astonishing since many Native nations had been exposed to termination and relocation programs in the 1950s. The continued existence of Native Americans will be contrasted with the stereotype of the Vanishing American, which is rooted in historical expectations but manifests itself in literature and film. Thus Native Americans continue to combat the stereotype and its effects. Students will be required to work with a number of primary sources, including photographs, treaties, legal texts, (auto)biographies and film, especially Hollywood movies.
