Unit Code:HIS2IJN
Alternative Unit Code:HIS3IJN
Unit Short Title:ISRAEL, JEWS AND THE NATIONS
Credit Points:20
Unit Description:In this unit students will investigate the history, culture and religion of the people of Israel from 538BCE to 200CE. This turbulent period in which both Judaism and Christianity emerged, is marked by the overlordship of three different Empires, the Persian, Greek and Roman as well as by wars of rebellion. Mass migration at various stages resulted in the establishment of Jewish settlements in many countries. Religion is inextricably entwined with the political, social and economic conditions of the period. Many different groups (Sadducees, Pharisees, Zealots and Essenes) made their appearance and it was during this time that the Dead Sea Scrolls, and later the Mishnah, were written. The above issues will be studied using, as source material, the works of ancient historians and philosophers as well as religious texts, all of which will be subjected to scrutiny in the face of archaeological data and historical evidence.
