| Unit Short Title: | ANDY WARHOL'S AMERICA: POP ART, POLITICS AND POPULAR CULTURE |
| Credit Points: | 20 |
| Unit Description: | Andy Warhol's America was a world of consumerism, celebrityhood, Kennedy glamour and sexual freedom, but also of racial conflict, political assassination and death by electric chair. In the period after World War Two, the United States came to world dominance in popular culture and to the forefront of 'high art'. Artists such as Andy Warhol merged the two. Beginning with postwar prosperity and optimism, through Cold War hysteria, the growing civil rights movement, student revolt, the counterculture, opposition to the Vietnam War, Black Power and the 'death of art', we trace the connections between culture, pop art and politics. |
