Unit Description:In this unit students will become acquainted with significant historical aspects of sixteenth-century Italian society and Elizabethan England that are fundamental to the legend of Romeo and Juliet. Four narrative versions of this legend will be studied and three film versions of it will be viewed in order to arrive at an understanding of the processes involved in adapting the legend from its original narrative form to drama and also to the medium of film.
Class Requirements:one 2-hour lecture/seminar and one 1-hour tutorial per week. For a pass in this unit students must normally attend at least 80% of the tutorials
