| Unit Description: | Genre occupies an important place in the study of cinema. In this unit issues surrounding the definition of genre and the history of genre criticism will be addressed. The examples are drawn primarily from early American cinema to the present, although a comparative study is also made with models of other international genres. Topics covered include: the evolution of genre styles from classical to postmodern; the cultural specificity of particular genres in relation to their wider appeal and cultural relevance; the relation of genre to industry and authorship; the evolution of genre styles and iconography. |
| Prerequisites: | For CST2GES: 30 credit points of first year cinema studies or coordinator's approval. For CST3GES: 20 credit points of second year cinema studies or coordinator's approval |
