CIV4GTB, 2009

Unit Code:CIV4GTB
Unit Short Title:GEOTECHNOLOGY B
Credit Points:15.0
Unit Description:The topics covered include a review of the geotechnical properties of soils; soil classification; Atterberg limits; steady state seepage; effective stress concept; and consolidation and shear strength. Students study the purpose and methods of soil investigation in the field. Study on foundations includes the settlement of shallow foundations and bearing capacity of both deep and shallow foundations. Students learn about Rankine and Coulomb's active and passive earth pressures retaining walls, and the application of lateral earth pressure theories to design of sheet pile walls. The stability of infinite slopes, analysis of finite slope with circular method of slices, and Bishop's solution for stability of slopes with seepage are covered while studying slope stability. Students are also introduced to dams design.
