Unit Code:CIV2ST1
Unit Short Title:STRUCTURES 1
Credit Points:15.0
Unit Description:Topics: concepts of structural mechanics as a component of understanding structural behaviour in basic structural design principles and methods with particular application to steel and timber. Structural mechanics examines topics such as stress and strain, transformation of stress and strain in two dimensions, principal stresses and strains, Mohr's circle, stress-strain relationships, linear and non-linear behaviour, deflections of beams, strain energy, energy theorems, the behaviour of short and long columns, buckling, introduction to elastic-plastic analysis. Design component examines limit states design philosophy, loads (dead, live, wind and earthquake), steel and timber beams with and without lateral restraint, steel and timber columns with and without lateral restraints and tension members.
