Unit Description:In this unit students are introduced to the structure and properties of materials used in civil engineering. Topics include: Introduction to the types of materials and their characteristic properties, the structure-property-processing relationship, materials selection, bonding between atoms, structure of materials, mechanical properties of materials, carbon steels, concrete (cement, aggregates, admixtures, mix design, strength, durability), timber (classification, seasoning, grading and strength relationship, durability), geosynthetics (types and applications), bituminous materials, bricks and blocks, inspection of materials, non destructive testing, sampling, material specification and quality control.
Prerequisites:PHY1MS
Class Requirements:four 1-hour lectures and one 2-hour tutorial per week.
