| Unit Description: | In this subject students are introduced to Buddhist philosophy from its very beginnings to the later developments of the Mahayana. They will concentrate on five topics: theories about the general nature of the world and living beings (especially humans); theories of causality (for example, of karma and rebirth); theories of the absolute (that is, of nirvana, Buddhahood, tathata); theories of practice, that is, meditation and ethics; the early history of Buddhism. |
| Prerequisites: | any first year History, Religious Studies, Philosophy or Asian Studies subject, or lecturer's permission |
| Class Requirements: | two 1-hour lectures and one 1-hour tutorial per week |
