| Unit Short Title: | ITALIAN ART AND SOCIETY 1250-1400 |
| Credit Points: | 20 |
| Unit Description: | In this intensive Winter subject we examine the visual culture of Italy, and focus on the major centres of Rome, Siena, Assisi, Pisa, Florence, Pistoia, Verona and Padua in the 13th and 14th centuries. A period of flourishing artistic production is witnessed in Italy during this time, coinciding with the emergence of a range of patrons including the new mercantile classes, lay religious confraternities and the Mendicant Orders. Social, religious, political and economic issues are addressed as forces which shape various forms of visual communication and include the development of regional Republican governments, the impact of the Black Death, and trade with the Levant. We explore the visual culture of various cities, examining works of art and architecture in their original location and context. Issues of function, purpose and use are studied in order to ascertain the various messages conveyed by the original patrons of the commission and its intended impact on the broader audience. |
