| Unit Description: | In the seventeenth century, Caravaggio and Annibale Caracci brought about a profound revolution in painting at the beginning of the century by means of greatly increased naturalism, illusionism and dramatic use of light and shade. The subject explores the nature of this revolution through the work of Caravaggio, the Caracci, Bernini, Borromini, Guido Reni, Velazquez and others. It interrogates the links between visual images, scientific discoveries and spirituality during the period. |
