| Unit Description: | How did convicts, soldiers and other early settlers picture the country and come to terms with its difference? How were British 'ways of seeing' transferred to Australia? How did this contrast with Aboriginal conceptions of the land? Why has national identity traditionally resided in depictions of the Australian bush, desert or beach? How have political and social issues such as Indigenous dispossession and environmentalism find potent expression in our visual imagery? |
