| Unit Description: | In this unit we will explore the major styles in European art and architecture from ancient Greece to the Renaissance. Students will study such artists as Giotto, Raphael and Michelangelo, and such buildings as the Parthenon and Chartres Cathedral. Emphasis is given to the representation, in painting and sculpture, of the human form. The unit introduces students to the methods of visual analysis and the meaning of images. Where possible, first-hand study is required of selected works available in Melbourne. Together with one or both of the other first-year art history subjects, this unit serves as an introduction to second-year offerings in the discipline. |
