Unit Short Title:ANCIENT MAYA CIVILISATION OF MEXICO AND GUATEMALA

Unit Description:The Maya developed one of the world's great civilisations in what is now southern Mexico and northern Central America. Maya people have inhabited this region for several millennia, and we investigate their cultural development from earliest times up to the Spanish conquest and beyond. We concentrate on Classic Maya civilisation (AD 250-900), the greatest florescence of Maya culture. Along the way we shall look at various aspects of the ancient Maya, from subsistence and trade, to politics, religion, and world view. The lecture/seminars will deal with topical issues, such as agriculture, writing and the calendar, Classic Maya society, and warfare.
Prerequisites:15 credit points of archaeology or history, or co-ordinator's approval

Class Requirements:one 1-hour lecture and one 2-hour seminar per week. For a pass in this subject students must normally attend at least 80% of the seminars
