| Unit Description: | In this subject students gain a theoretical and a methodological introduction to the archaeology of European expansion. Topics addressed in the lectures include theoretical issues in the development of historical archaeology as an area of research, colonialism, gender, ethnicity, indigenous historical archaeology, urbanisation, maritime archaeology, material culture studies and cultural resource management. Supplementary reading in each of these areas is provided and class participation is encouraged. |
| Prerequisites: | at least 15 credit points of archaeology or history or co-ordinator's approval |
| Class Requirements: | one 2-hour lecture and one 1-hour laboratory session per week. For a pass in this subject students must normally attend at least 80% of the tutorials |
