| Unit Description: | In this subject we explore the complex and controversial relationship between the 'body' and the 'mind' from a variety of cultural perspectives and across a range of diverse life-fields. We question basic epistemological assumptions of Western science and challenge the limitations of empirical knowledge, including the ethnographic method. We consider various interpretative frameworks, (e.g., phenomenology, psychoanalysis, hermeneutics, etc.) while examining diverse corporeal and psychological phenomena and cultural orientations/beliefs (e.g., embodiment, body-image, body-modification [tattoo, scarification], self-identity, mysticism and shamanism, etc.). |
| Prerequisites: | 30 credit points of first-year sociology, anthropology or Asian studies, or co-ordinator's approval. |
