Unit Short Title:FROM HOMER TO HOLLYWOOD: THE PERENNIAL GREEK HERO/HEROINE

Unit Description:In this subject the definition of heroism is traced through successive phases of Greek and other traditions from antiquity to the present day using a variety of sources ranging from ancient/ medieval epics to modern heroic ballads, popular songs, theatre and novels, film, comics and animation. Students select heroes and heroines for in-depth study from the range surveyed, including warriors of the Homeric epics, tragic and comic heroes/heroines of ancient Greek theatre and historical figures such as: Alexander the Great, Digenis Akritas, social bandits, nationalist rebels and militia-men of the 15th to 19th centuries. Anti-heroes of 20th century urban Greece, the Greek version of the Marxist guerrilla, and Hollywood reincarnations of Odysseus, Herakles and others will be studied. Comparisons with other traditions will be made and encouraged.
Class Requirements:one 3-hour lecture/workshop per week. For a pass in this subject students must normally attend at least 80% of the tutorials
