Unit Short Title:ANCIENT MEDITERRANEAN CULTURE - THE GREEK ACHIEVEMENT

Unit Description:In this subject students are introduced to the diversity of the ancient Greek achievement, which has exercised a fundamental and continuing influence upon later European literature and culture. Several of the following aspects are treated, usually focusing on material from the 5th century BC. Literature of various genres (epic, tragedy, comedy, etc), philosophy, art, history, architecture, religion, mythology. A variety of sources are treated to enable students to build up a picture of Greek society as a whole. Texts are read in translation and students are encouraged to consider certain questions of method, (for example, historical versus literary evidence) in dealing with the study of a culture removed in time and nature from our own.
Class Requirements:one 2-hour lecture and one 1-hour tutorial per week. For a pass in this subject students must normally attend at least 80% of the tutorials
