Fares and zones
myki
Myki is a durable, plastic smart card which stores value and can be used over and over again. Keep your myki topped up and you'll always be ready for travel. You can purchase your myki online here.
Each time you travel on a train, tram or bus you must 'touch on' and 'touch off' at the myki reader. The exception to this is when traveling on a tram - you will only need to touch off if your whole trip is within Zone 2 (see maps).
You can apply for a refund of any unused myki money, unused myki pass or part used myki pass at any time by completing the myki Refund and Reimbursement form.
Metcard
You can no longer purchase or use Metcard.
Metcard is the older paper based ticketing system which was phased out at the end of 2012.
Public transport zoning
La Trobe University is located in the zone boundary overlap. Students and staff traveling within this zone can travel with a valid ticket for either zone. Zone 1 covers the CBD and inner suburbs, while Zone 2 covers the outer suburbs.
- If you are traveling to La Trobe University from the inner suburbs use a Zone 1 ticket.
- If you are traveling to La Trobe University from the outer suburbs use a Zone 2 ticket.
See the train network map and/or look up your individual bus route to select the ticket that best suits your travel. Note: Macleod train station is a Zone 2 station and cannot be accessed using a Zone 1 ticket.
Student concessions
Australian citizens or permanent residents studying full-time at La Trobe University are eligible for public transport concessions. This is approximately half the price of full-fare tickets. For more information regarding eligibility please visit Metlink Student Concessions.
Student concessions prices are available to holders of Victorian Public Transport (VPT) cards. You can apply for a VPT concession card and a student pass by completing the 2012 VPT and Student Pass Application Form (PDF 145KB).
