Dr David Hoxley

Dr David Hoxley – La Trobe academic and first year coordinator in the Department of Physics – is a true thought leader within his field and in the La Trobe Community.

Over ten years ago, Dr Hoxley contracted a boutique haematological malignancy known as ‘multiple myeloma’. As he underwent chemotherapy, Dr Hoxley realised that while more cancers have become treatable, they have also become more expensive to treat. Through his own experience and his postdoctoral research, Dr Hoxley says he has found a way to make cancer treatments effective and to improve patients’ quality of life.

His research focuses on using the electronic properties of diamonds to construct sensors that signal when the body is in a suitable condition for treatment. This means patients are able to react better to chemotherapy treatment and spend less time in hospital overall.
