Setting up a class

Student papers can only be submitted to a class. You can create more than one class, and within a class you can make a number of assignments. You can allow students to resubmit so they can check their work before final submission.

Creating a class

On the instructor homepage click ‘add a class’. You will need to enter;

  • Class name
  • Class enrolment password

Choose an end date which is after the finishing date of your subject. Once the Turnitin class has expired you cannot access it again.

Click the ‘Let students view their own Originality Reports for all paper assignments in this class?’ to enable students to view their own reports.

Click ‘submit’ to add the class. You will receive a Turnitin class ID.

To enable students to submit their own papers, you will need to give your students

  • the class enrolment password (you selected) and
  • the Turnitin class ID

Create an assignment

Open the class homepage.

Click ‘create a new assignment’.

Enter the following:

  • Assignment title
  • Special assignment instructions (Here you can provide instruction to students eg. Make sure your name is not on the paper, remove the bibliography / reference list to reduce text matches.)

Choose a start date and end date.

You can choose to allow student submissions after the assignment due date by using the Advanced Assignment Options.

Resubmitting student papers

You can allow to students to resubmit their work in two ways.

  1. Using Advanced Assignment options
    • In the originality report options choose ‘Generate Originality Report for student submissions immediately (can overwrite reports until due date)’.
    • The report will be generated immediately. Then students can choose to resubmit their papers and receive reports until the assignment's due date.
    •  Usually reports are only generated immediately for a student's first submission; subsequent reports for submissions are delayed 24 hours.
  2. Using the Revision option
Creating a revision assignment allows students to submit another draft of their paper.
    • To create a revision assignment, click ‘create a new assignment’ on your class homepage.
    • Using the pulldown at the top of the assignment page, select revision assignment. You will need to select a paper assignment.
    • You will also need to enter dates and optional assignment instructions.
