The Government has committed $350,000 towards a $1.2 million Industry Outreach program, including the development of a virtual testbed with the Australian Industry Group (Ai Group) and IPv6Now. IPv6 is the "next generation" protocol designed to replace the current version Internet Protocol, IPv4. Most of today's internet uses IPv4, which is now nearly twenty years old and there is a growing shortage of IPv4 addresses, which are needed by all new machines added to the Internet. IPv6 fixes a number of problems in IPv4. The VIC6 outreach program will be delivered through a limited number of core nodes, which will be a reference point for innovation in network, industry products and processes. It will enable the participants to experience a functional IPv6 network, test their own existing equipment for IPv6 capability, test how their software operates in an IPv6 network; experiment with hardware and software configurations, engage in research and skills development. The Centre for Technology Infusion at La Trobe University is a Core Node of VIC6. Content Approved by: Director, Centre for Technology Infusion
