Flexible learning
Flexible learning at La Trobe University
Flexible learning approaches are most effective when developed around situated learner contexts, and built on the contingencies of time, spaces and resources. The network of city and regional campuses that constitutes La Trobe University requires multi-campus teaching of programs and units. In order to offer high quality learning to all students, flexible learning needs to be organised around three factors:
- the physical learning spaces and infrastructure on all campuses
- the technologies and support for the online learning environment available to staff and students
- the organisation of teaching and learning approaches, resources and support for learning.
Flexible learning approaches are part of La Trobe University's commitment to high quality student learning, and use learning technologies to make best use of the contingencies of time and space. La Trobe University's Statement of the Use of Technologies to Support Learning and Teaching at La Trobe University emphasises approaches that combine face-to-face and technology supported learning. From the statement, by the Learning Technologies Policy and Governance Committee, Jan 2008, La Trobe University will use learning technologies to:
- enhance the nature and scope of learning experiences;
- provide increased flexibility for staff and students;
- increase access to resources that support learning;
- support collaboration and communication between staff and students, and among students;
- meet student expectations about the appropriate uses of technologies to support learning and engagement;
- assist students in learning how to use technologies effectively; and
- create learning experiences that would otherwise be difficult to provide.
The particular configuration of Faculties and Schools across multiple campuses at La Trobe University offers opportunities for flexible learning approaches.
