An effective university teacher needs to draw on a range of strategies from both practice and research to improve the quality of student learning.

There is a great deal of literature and research on what makes for effective university teaching. Taking a scholarly approach to developing teaching knowledge and practice by drawing upon the best available research and evidence is an important aspect for the development of a professional university teacher. In addition, most university teachers would have their own experiences of learning as a student to draw on when they first start teaching.

A great deal about teaching can be learnt 'on-the-job', in conversations with colleagues and by watching others teach. These experiences are all invaluable to developing effective teaching strategies.

These guides are intended to provide an introduction to university teaching, and to provide some practical teaching hints and tips for the classroom.
