Professional Development

Professional Development Workshops

Professional development for teaching and learning is an important aspect to both personal skills development and careers advancement at La Trobe. The CTLC offers a range of opportunities to support your academic, teaching and curriculum development. This includes the following programs, workshops and seminars:

Mentoring for teaching

Professional development can also be advanced through mentoring for teaching. Mentoring is a relationship in which a more experienced member of staff (mentor) supports a less experienced colleague (mentee) as the mentee works to develop his or her professional skills and approaches in ways that are relevant to herself or himself. The following pages on mentoring for teaching are designed to assist in the setting up of a mentoring system at school or department level. However the materials are also helpful for those staff who wish to set up an 'unofficial' mentoring process.

Applying for promotion

For teaching staff interested in career advancement, a case might be made on the basis of teaching expertise. On the following pages, a series of brief video clips explain various aspects of the promotions process. This includes making the case for a promotion based on teaching and how curriculum development work might count.

Staff considering a promotion should also visit the Academic Promotions page on the La Trobe Intranet from the People and Culture site [restricted to La Trobe University staff].
