Developing student engagement
Hosted by La Trobe University and the Australian Council for Educational Research, the 2009 Student Engagement Forum focuses on the role student engagement plays in enhancing education and learning in Australian universities. In doing this it looks broadly at how evidence from surveys can be used both to enhance practice and for quality improvement.
The forum will provide:
- a background on student engagement
- advice on policies and practices for engaging students at your university
- insights from national and international surveys.
Professor George Kuh will be giving a keynote presentation. George Kuh is Chancellor’s Professor of Higher Education at Indiana University Bloomington where he directs the Centre for Postsecondary Research. Founding director of the widely-used National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE), George has written extensively about student engagement, assessment, institutional improvement, and college and university cultures. He has consulted with more than 200 colleges and universities in the USA and abroad.
Forum details
- The forum runs from 9am to 4pm on Thursday 2 July.
- The forum will be held in Melbourne at the John Scott Meeting House, Bundoora Campus (PDF 1.5MB).
- Arrival coffee, morning tea, lunch are provided. Drinks following the forum have been kindly sponsored by the Australasian Association for Institutional Research (AAIR).
- Delegates are encouraged to bring insights and resources from their institution. The forum does not assume prior preparation by participants, or knowledge of student engagement or experience of the NSSE or AUSSE.

Registration
The cost of the Student Engagement Forum is $115 per person.
Participants are responsible for their own travel and accommodation arrangements.
