AUSSE AUSSE AUSSE
The Australasian Survey of Student Engagement (AUSSE) will kick off on July 27th, targeting first and third year undergraduate students. Alongside the AUSSE is the Staff Survey of Student Engagement (SSES) which will be sent to all academic staff to help identify correlations and gaps between the staff-student perceptions on engagement. Student engagement can be defined as the level of involvement in activities and processes that contribute to high quality learning outcomes. This can include within the classroom, extra curricula programs and level of effort students put into their own studies. Teaching staff have a valuable role to play in helping to promote the AUSSE survey to students to ensure a high response rate.
For more information on AUSSE, previous year’s reports and a PowerPoint slide that can be shown to students in class, please click through to the AUSSE webpage.
First Year Summit
The Student Engagement team will be hosting a First Year Summit on August 14th to bring students and staff together to discuss issues and opportunities relating to first year. As the curriculum renewal process focuses on the foundation to student success through a well planned first year curriculum, this is an opportunity to identify where and how the university can better support new students, and to engage students in the discussion. There are limited places available for the Summit, and staff who are particularly involved in first year teaching and curriculum development, student support and transition are encouraged to register.
The Summit will be opened by Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Belinda Probert and will be held between 10am-2pm at the John Scott Meeting House. Please contact Ngaere Blair, Manager Student Engagement on x 3425 for more information or email n.blair@latrobe.edu.au to register your interest.

A history in narrative and song
- Introductory Lecture: Dr Jennifer Ridden (History Program, School of Historical & European Studies)
- Performance by Braemar and guest artists
- Presented by La Trobe University and the School of Historical and European Studies
- Sponsored by the Curriculum, Teaching and Learning Centre, La Trobe University
The story of the Jacobite rebellions, romanticised in song and felt deeply in the hearts of Scottish people and their descendants all over the world. The story begins with injustice and ends with the destruction of the Scottish Clan system and the virtual destruction of Scottish language, music and culture. During this story, tens of thousands of Scots are butchered, or humiliated and forced to flee from their homes.
But this is also a story of hope and endurance. Forced or otherwise, the whole world has benefited from the emigration of the Scots. The Scots, Highland and Lowland, shine in the world because they are tough, determined, honest and loyal.
